Trust Yourself Thursday 4/7: Silencing Doubt with the Van Gogh Method

Derek H. Suite, M.D.

Do you ever wonder why some people seem to move through life with unwavering confidence while others constantly second-guess themselves?

The difference often comes down to a single powerful element: Self-trust.

Today on Trust Yourself Thursday, Dr. Derek Suite dives deep into what might be the most important relationship you'll ever cultivate—the one with yourself.

Drawing wisdom from historical figures like Cicero, who proclaimed, "Nobody can give you wiser advice than yourself," and Vincent van Gogh, who taught us that action silences our inner critic, we explore how self-trust becomes the foundation for everything else in your life.

The world constantly competes for your trust, bombarding you with opinions and advice that can drown out your inner voice. Yet, as Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely noted, "self-trust is the first secret of success."

Through powerful examples and practical insights, we examine how trusting yourself isn't about arrogance but about recognizing the wisdom and strength that already exists within you.

When high-performing athletes get stuck, we often return to this fundamental truth: When you trust yourself more, you accomplish more.

Speaker 1:

Love and blessings. Sweet Spotters. This is Dr Derek Sweet, and you're listening to the Sweet Spot and guess what it is. Trust Yourself, thursday. You're doing it. You're making it through this week. On Monday, you made the move. On Tuesday, you took action. On Wednesday, you began seeing yourself as a winner and you just wanted to win it all. And today, on Trust Yourself Thursday, it's all about trusting yourself. It's all about digging deep and recognizing that inside of you you have all the tools you need and you have to start truly accessing this and believing it. So we're going to dive in today to the most powerful relationship you will ever have the one with yourself.

Speaker 1:

You know that philosopher writer Cicero once said nobody can give you wiser advice than yourself. That's right, and Robert Too said this. He echoed it when he said in his quote If you are going to trust one person, let that person be you. Okay, these are not just feel good sayings, these are fundamental truths. We live in a world, my friend, that's competing for your trust, that wants you to trust it over yourself, and that's no good, no bueno. We live in a world filled with opinions, advice and distractions, but you know what? Amidst all that noise, there's a voice within you, your intuition, your gut feeling, your smiley senses, your inner compass, your Holy Spirit, whatever you want to call it. That voice, that voice holds the key to your true potential.

Speaker 1:

Emerson, one of my favorite authors, nailed it when he said self-trust is the first secret of success. I repeat self-trust is the first secret of success. Listen, I work with a lot of athletes. I work with a lot of high performers and sometimes, when they're stuck, we go right back to the basics and we figure out where am I not trusting all that's inside of me? And you'd be surprised that when you trust yourself more, you're able to do more. Think about it. When you trust yourself, you're not afraid to take risks, to step outside of your comfort zone, to pursue your dreams with unwavering conviction.

Speaker 1:

Because you trust yourself, we as humans often let doubt creep in, that nagging voice that says you can't do it, you're gonna fail. So-and-so is better than me. What if I mess up? But remember what Vincent van Gogh said If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint and remember van gogh is one of the greatest painters in the world and he said it if you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. And what does van gogh mean by that? He meant that if you take action, if you step out against that little devilish voice that's trying to make you stop, and you start doing it, that voice becomes quiet because it no longer has the privilege. Don't let that voice hold you back. Let your actions silence your doubts.

Speaker 1:

Jm Barrie said another one. I love this one. The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it. Imagine that you have the ability to soar, to achieve incredible heights, to do things that you can't even imagine. But let doubt come in and it will clip your wings.

Speaker 1:

So trusting yourself isn't about arrogance, isn't about ignoring other people's advice. No, you certainly should talk to counselors, and a multitude of counselors. There's a lot of wisdom there, but you don't want to be begging people to tell you what to do and only going by what they say. You want to acknowledge your own strengths, recognize where you have weaknesses, talk to people about that if you must, and then have the courage to make your own decision and follow your path. It's about listening to the still small voice inside. It's about knowing that you have the answers within you, that you have the resilience, the wisdom and the power to navigate any challenge that comes your way. You've been on this planet, however many years you have been, and you have been navigating.

Speaker 1:

So this Thursday I compliment you for having come this far. You for having come this far. Let's make a commitment together to ourselves that we're going to silence the doubts and amplify the right inner voice, the one that wants us to entrust ourselves to being the most incredible version of ourselves. We can be the person we were created to be. Remember you have everything you need within you. Trust that. Believe that and watch your life transform out of your belief and your trust it's. It's.

Speaker 1:

In ancient wisdom they put it this way trust not in your own understanding, right, trust, trust in God. Trust in something bigger than you to guide you. Believe in that bigger power and let it guide you. That's all you have to do, because once you trust yourself and trust the God within you, trust the power within you, oh my, nothing is going to get in your way. Believe it.
