Dr. Derek Suite - The Suite Spot

Run The Risk Reap The Reward 1/7: Making Moves Monday: Are You Playing It Too Safe?

Derek H. Suite, M.D.

The boldest move we can make isn't always a business decision or relationship leap—sometimes it's simply believing in yourself enough to try. When we reframe risk as not just about danger but also about courage, faith, and growth, we unlock our potential to achieve greater rewards.

Key Suite Spots:
• Our brains are wired to avoid uncertainty through the amygdala (fear center)
• Taking calculated risks activates the prefrontal cortex—your brain's CEO and decision maker
• Every bold step builds new neural pathways that train your brain to trust your momentum
• "Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest." (Ecclesiastes 11:4)
• Waiting for certainty is often the biggest risk of all
• Playing it safe can mean settling for the ordinary when you weren't born to settle
• Small risks worth taking could include booking that doctor's appointment, launching your business, or having tough conversations
• "You don't have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step and trust what's in you"
• Time is the only wealth we've been given—don't throw it away waiting for perfect conditions

Speaker 1:

Greetings and welcome. Welcome to the sweet spot. Today is Making Moves Monday, and I'm sure glad you're here. I'm delighted that we're going to be spending this week together. Going in on yet another topic Remember last week we talked about this whole idea of when you stand, you win.

Speaker 1:

Remember last week, we talked about this whole idea of when you stand, you win. The week before, we talked about courage being contagious. So I invite you to go back and listen to those series, because there's a lot of insight in them Contagious courage and when you stand, you win. So what about this week? Beautiful souls? I have something great to share with you this week. It's about risk, and we're going to call this week's theme run the risk and reap the reward. That's right, beautiful souls. You've got to run the right risk so that you can reap the right reward.

Speaker 1:

So, as a board certified psychiatrist who works in sports and high performance, I'm involved in conversations that talk about taking risks. It's extremely important that an athlete or performer or high-level business person be able to weigh risk and reward and then take risks to get the kinds of rewards that they're looking at. But that's not limited to high performers, it's each and every one of us. But look, before we get into that, let me tell you something about the way we, as humans, frame risk. I think we've been conditioned to think of risk as dangerous, and there's nothing wrong with that. There are dangers. When most people hear the word risk, they immediately think of danger, failure, loss, and sure that's a part of it. But what if I told you risk has another side too, that there's another way to look at risk? Risk is about courage, it's about faith. Risk is about growth as well. It's the cost of stepping into the unknown and the key to unlocking something greater if you look at it from a different angle. So that's why, on this sweet spot, this Making Moves Monday, we're going to be flipping the script on what risk really means and why the reward is almost always on the other side of the risk you are willing to take. And today's message on Making Moves Monday is bet on you, bet on you. Let's be real. Some of the biggest risks we'll ever take aren't business decisions, they aren't relationship leaps, even they aren't even new ventures. Sometimes the boldest move, my friend, is believing in yourself enough to even try. To try to do the thing that scares you, to try to do the thing that you've been putting off. Sometimes that's the boldest move.

Speaker 1:

Look, you know that we always talk about neuroscience here on the Sweet Spot. I'm going to go right into it. Your brain is wired to avoid uncertainty. It's a survival tool we all have. Remember the amygdala? We talk about it almost every session.

Speaker 1:

Right, the amygdala, the fear center, the threat detector in the brain. It's in the limbic system. It lights up any time the outcome of anything feels unclear. There's a part of our brain that just lights up and says, hey, don't take a chance, don't take the risk. But guess what? When you do take a calculated risk, when you do take a risk on yourself and you step forward anyway in courage, the other part of your brain, the CEO of your, your brain, the one that makes decisions, the prefrontal cortex. It gets activated. That's your decision maker, that's your goal setter, that's your director. And when you are not operating in fear and you're operating in, I see the risk, but I'm going to take a calculated risk that I can get this reward, boy. Your brain in the PFC or the prefrontal cortex area, lights up. Every bold step, builds you a new neural pathway. You literally train your brain to trust your own momentum when you start taking calculated risks. That's a bit of neuroplasticity.

Speaker 1:

And if you don't like science, let's turn to the ancient wisdom, shall we? You know, we also love ancient wisdom. Here on the Sweet Spot, we love going into scriptures. And guess what? There is a scripture that says this Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. I'll repeat that Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. That's in Ecclesiastes 11, verse 4. Amazing verse 4. Amazing, of course, because if you wait for perfect weather, well, that may or may not come. So the translation of this phrase farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant, and if they watch every cloud, they never harvest.

Speaker 1:

The translation, in my view, is if you wait for certainty, that's the biggest risk of all. And sometimes, my friends, that's the hardest thing to see is that playing it safe and waiting for certainty is a risk, maybe the biggest risk, because nothing gets done. As Jim Rohn said, if you're not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary. If you're not willing to risk the unusual, you have to settle for the ordinary. And guess what? You were not born to settle. That is not your destiny, but you've got to take that risk. Look and it's not always about jumping off a bridge or doing something daring Somebody out there listening right now is afraid to schedule a doctor's visit.

Speaker 1:

Let's just think about that. Afraid of a diagnosis. But what if the real risk is not knowing what? If the real risk is not knowing what? If the real risk is sitting on something that grows and becomes deadly? Or maybe you're sitting on a dream, a plan, maybe it's a book that you're supposed to be writing, a brand, you're supposed to be launching A business that you should have gotten off the ground, but you keep folding before you even play a hand. Doctor's orders today, take the risk and bet on you.

Speaker 1:

Okay, take one bold action today that puts you in motion, because on the other side of fear is everything that you want. Sitting at home, hiding behind the door or playing games with yourself and not taking the risk is actually your biggest risk. You've got to take bold action today why? Because, number one, you're listening to the Sweet Spot and it's Making Moves. Monday, and every Monday, we challenge ourselves to make a move. So the one bold action, the risk you have to take today is maybe you need to book the doctor's appointment. Maybe you need to post that project you want to do. Maybe it's about launching your business. Maybe it's about having a tough conversation. Maybe it's about going all out.

Speaker 1:

When you have to perform today, you don't have to see the whole path. You don't have to see the whole staircase. You know the quote you don't got to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step and trust what's in you. When you, my friend, are able to take the calculated risk, I guarantee you you will eventually see a reward.

Speaker 1:

No risk, no reward can't be successful in business and life without taking risks. It's that simple. When you play it too safe, you're taking the biggest risk of your life. Time is the only wealth you've been given. Don't throw it away. So today, on Making Moves Monday, figure out what move do you have to take. What little risk do you have to take? Wear those outfits that you don't want to wear. Sing that song that you don't want to sing, you know. Go learn a new skill. Figure something out, train for it, stretch into it, stand in the tension of it all. Run the risk today and reap the reward. This is Dr Derek Sweet. Thank you for listening.
