Speaker 1Greetings and welcome Welcome back to the sweet spot. I'm Dr Derek Sweet, I'm your host and you are in the Making Moves Monday episode of the sweet spot, where science meets the soul. This week on the sweet spot, we're exploring something that's been on my heart lately and that's about power. Not just power, but purposeful power. Now, I know what some of you might be thinking Power, that's the CEO kind of talk or the professional athlete talk. But let me share something beautiful with you. I'm talking about a deeper power than that. I'm talking about the power you already possess.
Maya Angelou's Ancestral Wisdom
Speaker 1I'm talking about three distinct sources of power that you can tap into at any moment, my friend, and I want you to think of them as different instruments in your personal arsenal, your personal toolkit or orchestra. The first is your personal physical power, not just your muscular power, not just the power in your bones, but the energy that's in you that allows you to move around, the energy that's in you that allows you to breathe and to have a presence, a physical presence. Today, now, you may not be able to move around like you always wanted to or like you used to, but look, you do have some physical presence, you are breathing, and that, my friend, is physical power. With every breath you are signaling to your body, I can bring oxygen in here, I can deliver fuel to my cells and I can do something. So that's physical energy. Then there's your second instrument, your second source of power, and that's your mental power. Yes, what's in your brain here? The mental power, your remarkable, remarkable ability to learn something new today, to figure out something that might be puzzling you, to adapt to some situation that you need to figure out and make work for you and to overcome as needed. So that's mental power.
Three-Breath Power Exercise
Speaker 1Now, your final power here is not to be toyed with. This is your spiritual power, that deep inner wisdom and connection to something greater than yourself, this ability for you to transcend whatever is going on and be in a spiritual place, the place that gives you a peace that will surpass understanding this Monday. You know. This reminds me of something that Maya Angelou once said that deeply moved me. She said that you and I have been paid for each of us black, white, brown, yellow, red, whatever pigment you use to describe yourselves that has been paid for and paid for by our ancestors, without whom we wouldn't even be here. That's so fascinating to me that there are those who've gone before us, who had made moves on Mondays before us and who use these three same sources their physical bodies, their minds and their mental energy and their spirits to make sure that you and I are here today. Wow.
Speaker 1Now here's where things get really interesting, and this is what I love about bringing together the science and the soul here on Making Moves Monday. You know that feeling of power you get when you hear the words, like Maya Angelou, like she just said, like we just heard, that's not just inspiration, that's our brain chemistry being completely motivated when we hear good, powerful words. Motivated when we hear good, powerful words, when we are aligning ourselves with great quotes, listening to the right music and seeing positive things to ourselves, we are deliberately focusing our mental, physical and spiritual attention in our brains and we are letting a particular part of our brain called the anterior cingulate cortex I think that's what they call it the anterior cingulate cortex. That's the part of the brain that lights up like a Christmas tree and releases a cascade of neurochemicals that energizes us and gets us ready for the day. And this beautiful design by God right. Who has not given us a spirit of fear? Who has given us a spirit of what? Power, right, love and self-discipline. That's what the scriptures say, right? It helps our brain chemicals feel good. It helps us feel awesome. And isn't that amazing, right, how modern neuroscience is catching up with what ancient wisdom already knew? Wow, all right. So let's end with this. Let's put this knowledge that we are getting about purposeful power together.
Speaker 1I want to share with you a simple but profound exercise. I call the three sources the three check-in sources. Don't worry if you're busy. This is real simple. What I want you to do is take three deliberate breaths today. And with your first breath, I want you to feel your physical power and give thanks for something in you that's working, that you can take this breath even, or move your limbs, wiggle your toes, whatever it is. With your second breath, I want you to acknowledge the mental power. You have to make a decision right now to change your mind about something right now, to do something mentally that gets you in the right state, the right mood and the right attitude right now, no matter how small it is right.

Speaker 1And with your third breath, I want you to connect to your spiritual power, whether that's your faith, your purpose, your sense of belonging, whatever you want to call it, but your spiritual power. For some of us, it's a prayer, for some of us, it's just saying thank you, god, for having me see another day, another Monday. That's how amazing it is. That's how amazing it is. Can you feel, if you've done these three breaths, how powerful you are? And can you feel that power running through your body? I know I can feel it. So, my friend, I want you, on this Making Moves Monday, to remember your three sources of power your body, your mind and your spirit. And I want you to go out and I want you to make sure that somebody else feels gratitude for these three sources. And if one of the sources isn't working well, focus on the other one.
Speaker 1Maybe today isn't the greatest mental day, well then, maybe it's time to go for a walk or do something physical. Or maybe you're physically limited, well, maybe it's time to reflect. And maybe you feel physically and mentally down. Well, this is a great time to pray, to meditate, to believe that God has a bigger and better plan for you All.
