SPEAKER_00Emotional wellness involves our ability to balance and navigate all kinds of feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that we experience during the day. When we're emotionally well, we're able to tolerate the stress of relationships. We're able to tolerate disagreements, tolerate disturbances in our emotional world. Now, just as in the physical dimension, there are five factors that are important to handling emotion. And you may be surprised to learn that it's the same five factors that we discussed in the physical wellness dimension. And they are sleep, nutrition, exercise, hydration, and recovery. Yes, the same five factors. They do matter here in the emotional wellness dimension. Let's take a quick look. Sleep. Remember, we said that sleep is extremely important because without it, we cannot be refreshed physically. The same is true mentally. Without seven hours of sleep, we may lose our mental focus. It has been shown that lack of sleep can make us grouchy, make us irritable, make us too tired to be involved in doing the tasks that we're assigned, and generally make us less patient with other people. Let's look at nutrition. Well, eating the wrong foods has been shown to deplete our energies. When we eat processed foods or foods that don't have nutrients in them, we actually have lower energy, we fatigue earlier, and our emotional state, which is tied into our physical state and our ability to have energy, is also compromised. So eating nutritious foods is important to emotional wellness. Now, exercise is well known to create euphoric feelings and feelings of happiness and joy. When we're working out and we're feeling physically well and we're feeling emotionally well, we're in a better space to interact with each other and we feel so much more in control of ourselves once we're exercising on a regular basis. It's an excellent way to establish and promote well-being. Beyond exercise is hydration. It is extremely important that we are hydrated because when we're dehydrated, we can become cranky, we can become confused. Dehydration is also linked to poor attention spans. Athletes who are dehydrated don't perform well cognitively and they don't perform well physically. The same is true for any performer in any dimension. And lastly, recovery. Mental recovery is so important because we handle so many stresses on a daily basis within our environment. So taking the time out to breathe, to relax, to meditate, to let go is also important because it gives us a sense of balance and helps our emotional wellness. Thank you for listening to this. I hope you would reflect on your sleep, your nutrition, your exercise, your hydration, and your recovery and see how they apply to making you emotionally well.
