Welcome And Series Setup

SPEAKER_00

Greetings and welcome. Welcome back to the sweet spot, sweet spotters. I'm Dr. Derek Sweet. You're in the sweet spot. Today is Take Action Tuesday on the Sweet Spot. We never just say Tuesday, it's Take Action Tuesday. Are you ready to take action? I know you are, so that's why you're here. And I'm telling you, you're gonna enjoy this series we're doing. It's a series called Today's Word. We're literally looking at a word a day, a word a day that motivates

From Move To Act

SPEAKER_00

us. Yesterday we talked about move, M-O-V E. We said nothing happens until something moves. We talked about physics, remember? We talked about inertia. We talked about an object at rest is gonna stay at rest and that an object in motion is going to stay in motion and it's gonna be tough for that object to change direction. We talked about the brain. We said that an inch of movement matters more than a mile of intention. That was all yesterday, making moves Monday. And if you took that step yesterday with me, even a small step, a small one, I want to acknowledge you because you did what you said you were gonna do. You made your move. And I want you to feel that right now. Because that was real, and your tiny step that you took yesterday counted. But today we go one layer deeper. Because here's the thing about movement: movement can be physical, you can pace around the room and never change your life. You could stay busy all day and really look super busy to everybody else, but be going in circles and actually do nothing that matters. Today's word isn't just about moving. Today's word is act.

Motion Versus Intentional Action

SPEAKER_00

A C T Act. There's a difference between motion and action, sweet builder. There's a big difference between motion and action. Sometimes we don't make the distinction, but I'm gonna make it with you today because motion is activity, action is intentional, action is purposeful, action is directed movement towards something that matters. And the gap between those two things, action and motion, that's where most people live their entire lives in the gap. You know, John Wolfgang von Gogh, one of the greatest literary minds in human history, wrote this in his book, Maxims and Reflections. This is what he wrote. Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. Knowing, not enough, willing, not enough. We must apply, we must do. Yeah, knowing isn't enough. Willing is great, but that's not enough either. You gotta do something, we've gotta act. And Goth, this author, wasn't talking about effort. He was talking about the gap between the person you are in your mind and the person you become through your actions. Because there's usually a gap for many of us in there who we are in our minds and what we want to be, and then the actions we take. So, 200 years ago, this author named the exact trap most of us live in

The Brain Loop That Keeps You Stuck

SPEAKER_00

today. Here's what's happening in your brain when you stay stuck in the gap. Remember the default mode network, the group of neurons that circuit in your brain that we discussed a few weeks ago? The default mode network, the DMN, a circuit in your brain that activates when you're not focused on anything specific, you're kind of daydreaming, you're kind of just laying around. This default mode network in the brain, the DMN, it loops, it replays, it sort of analyzes, it's an autopilot, it rehearses every possible outcome, possible actions, and it can really tend to look at bad ones. Your brain is literally wired to keep you in your head with thought after thought after thought. Your brain is literally wired to keep you going in circles with all your thoughts. Have you ever been there? And the cruel irony, sweet builder, the cruel weird part about all of this is that the longer you stay in thinking mode without acting, the more your brain reinforces the habit of not acting. Yeah, paralysis by analysis. We overanalyze, we think and we think and we think. Yeah, so when the neural pathway between thought and action gets thinner, the gap gets wider, and the voice that says not yet gets louder. But the moment you and I act, even if it's an imperfect, faulty, tenuous step, even if it's an incomplete action or step that we take, the pathway in our brain lights up. Your brain starts to build a bridge between who you are and who you could be. And that bridge is act. Action. And it only takes one step to start building

Doing Beats Talking And Planning

SPEAKER_00

it. Amy Polar is one of the sharpest creative minds of our time. She wrote something that I still can't get out of my head. You know what she said? The talking about the thing isn't the thing. The doing of the thing is the thing. Let that land. The talking about the thing isn't the thing. The doing, it's the doing of the thing. That's the thing. Yeah. The talking about it, the planning, the researching, you know all the stuff we do. I speak to myself, the journaling about it, the holding it up to the light, looking at it a thousand times, rehearsing it, telling your friends about it, getting a vision board going, planning and planning and planning. None of that is the thing. You know what the thing is? Doing it. What is today? That's right. It's take action Tuesday. Yeah, yeah, sweet spotter. That's where sweet spotters live, is inside this action, right? The idea that you know what to do, you just haven't done it. You're waiting for the perfect time, but perfect isn't coming. You're afraid, but the fear doesn't mean stop. You take action. It means you gotta pay attention to what actions you're taking. You're not gonna live in overthinking today. Today is take action Tuesday. We have no time for overthinking. Just do it. Nike said it. They made a whole logo and a brand out of it. Just do it. Rumi, the 13th-century Sufi poet who we quote

Write Your Story Through Acts

SPEAKER_00

often here on the sweet spot. He said this. He said, Don't be satisfied with the stories. Don't be satisfied with the stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own story. Unfold your own myth. Your own myth. Yeah, don't be involved in somebody else's highlight real. Don't be watching somebody's story from the sidelines. Get in touch with your story. And the myth, the story cannot live only in your head. You've got to take action for the story to become real. What's your story? What's your story? And you know how your story tells itself? Through your actions. Every act is a sentence in the story of who you're becoming today. Right now. And if you're not acting, you're not writing the story. It's just a great idea. It's a thought. You're just reading other people's chapters and wondering why yours isn't written and why you feel stuck. Don't be stuck. It's Take Action Tuesday. You can take one tiny action. One tiny action and resurrect yourself and get up and breathe life into any project you got going today.

Faith Without Works And The Challenge

SPEAKER_00

And the ancient wisdom from the book of James is gonna co-sign this with me today because it says that faith, if it doesn't have works attached to it, if there's no action attached to it, is dead. Faith without works is dead. It's not sleeping and it's not resting. It's not chilling and it's not pausing, it's not recovering. It's dead. Dead, dead, dead. So that's the ancient wisdom, sweet spotter. Telling you and me to get up, take an action, however small, because you can have all the faith in the world, be a really good, faithful Christian, a great person of faith. But if you're not acting, you're not taking steps, dead. Yeah, I guess God didn't design faith to sit in the pew. He designed it to move through your hands, through your voice, through your choices, your daily activities, your actions, your courage, your commitment. You're willing to fall down seven and get up eight. Faith without action, beloved, is not faith. It's a wish. And look, wishing on a star, it's romantic and it's kind of nice and it's cool, but look, you're not built for wishes. You're built for work, for works. That's what we're built for today on Take Action Tuesday.

One Concrete Action You Take Today

SPEAKER_00

So here's what I want you to do today, sweet builder. You identified your one move yesterday on make making moves money. You did. You identified the one move you had to take. Today I want you to act on that move. What do you need to act on specifically right here, right now? Not I'll do it later, not I'll do it when I'm ready, not that I'm gonna wait for somebody else to tell me how to get it done. What can you do today? One act, even if you have to write it down like this is what I plan to do, that's an action. Even if you have to take a deep breath, that's an action today. Yeah, open the laptop, make the call, put on the put on the sneakers, send the message, book the appointment, go see the doctor, make the phone call, go tell coach what's really on your mind. Open the book, start studying. What do you have to do? Say yes to the thing you've been circling. Act as if the story of your life is being written right here, right now, in real time. You know why I'm asking you to do that, sweet spotter? Because it is. So, this is today's word. Act. Action. It's Take Action Tuesday. Tomorrow we come back for word number three. And Wednesday's word, oh, it's gonna change how you see what's possible.
