Welcome To The Sweet Spot
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the Sweet Spot with Dr. Derek Sweet, a board certified psychiatrist specializing in sports and performances. In the Sweet Spot, we explore what it takes to stay steady and perform when the pressure is on, and the moment matters. Stay tuned for Dr. Sweet's Finish Strong Friday.
Why Resilience Matters In Life
SPEAKER_01Life is not easy. It comes with no roadmap. There will be twists and turns. There'll be ups and downs. We will face obstacles, we will face mountains, and we will face danger. That is what life will give us. And at the same time, we can find something within us to meet life on its terms. We can be resilient. Resilience gives us the power to bend but not break. To fall but to also get up. Resilience gives us the power to try one more time. Resilience is about how badly we want it and what we will do to get it. Resilience can be developed. We can teach ourselves and train ourselves how to be resilient.
Build Strength Through Connection
SPEAKER_01The first thing is we've got to get connected. Getting connected, forming powerful relationships helps our resilience. A good relationship will help you find support when times are bad. And it will also give you resources when you feel alone.
Self Care That Fuels Recovery
SPEAKER_01Another way to increase your resilience is to take care of yourself. Tend to your own needs and feelings. Participate in activities or hobbies that you enjoy, and definitely include physical activity in your daily routine. Get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy diet, practice stress management and relaxation techniques, things like yoga, meditation, guided imagery, deep breathing, prayer, and relaxation.
Proactive Steps After Setbacks
SPEAKER_01To be resilient, you have to also be proactive. Don't ignore the problem. Don't run from it. Figure out what needs to be done, make a plan, and take action. It might take some time to recover from a major setback, it may take some time to get over the loss, to rebuild. But know that if you keep working at it and if you stay optimistic and stay positive, despite the dark times, you will see the light. You will find a way around this and you will overcome. This is Dr. Sweet. Until we meet again. Be resilient.
