Finish Strong Friday 5/7: Because That's What You Do

Derek H. Suite, M.D.

What truly separates top performers from everyone else?

It's not how they start—it's their unwavering commitment to finishing strong.

Drawing from years of experience as a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in high performance and sports psychiatry, Dr. Derek Suite delivers powerful insights that will transform how you approach your goals.

The journey to success begins with a mental decision: focusing on the finish line even when taking the first step. Dr. Suite reveals why breaking down big goals into manageable pieces works only when paired with an unshakable commitment to completion.

"Your focus has to begin with the finish in mind," he emphasizes, sharing wisdom gleaned from working with world-class athletes who consistently demonstrate this mindset.

Perhaps most crucially, Dr. Suite challenges us to embrace life's difficult moments rather than avoid them.

Citing Edison's observation that "our greatest weakness lies in giving up," and David Goggins's perspective that we're only 40% done when we think we're finished, he reminds us that our perceived limitations rarely reflect our true capabilities.

The race isn't for the swift, nor the battle for the strong—it's for those who persevere despite obstacles.

When you look in the mirror and refuse to compromise with yourself, you tap into reserves of determination that can carry you through any challenge.

STAY AMAZING!!

Speaker 1:

All right, hey, welcome back. Welcome back, sweet Spot family. It is Finish Strong Friday here on the Sweet Spot and I'm Dr Derek Sweet and I'm pumped. I am so pumped up to be with you today to go through a few beautiful insights, just beautiful insights, on why we have to finish strong, because that's where the magic happens, my friend, is when we finish strong. Look, I'm a board certified psychiatrist. I specialize in high performance and sports psychiatry. And I'll tell you, I work with a lot of individuals who are great finishers. And look, I get it.

Speaker 1:

Life throws curveballs. You're tired, you get distracted. But here's the thing I want you to walk away with this knowledge that your focus has to begin with the finish in mind. Your focus must be on finishing strong as well. Seriously, you have to break down those big goals into tiny, doable steps and focus on step by step. But don't you ever forget that you have a goal and though the whole staircase only starts with the first step, your intention has to be that you're going to finish.

Speaker 1:

And here's the other thing, my friend You've got to embrace the hard parts. That's what I've learned working with some of the world's top athletes and top performers. Life is hard, practice is hard, competition is hard yeah, they suck, to use the term but those tough moments, that's where you grow, that's where you become a finisher. Remember Edison's quote our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to always try just one more time. It's about pushing through, breaking through and seeing it through to the end. It's about having that grit. It's like what David Goggins said you're only 40% done when you think you're done. So it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Right, and that's a mental decision.

Speaker 1:

So when it gets tough, you're not going to bail, you're going to lean in, you're going to learn from this, you're going to push through it, you're going to embrace it, you're going to take it on and you're going to remember that the race is not just for the swift here, nor the battle for the strong. Like it says in ancient wisdom I think it's Ecclesiastes the race is not for the swift, nor the battle for the strong. Nor does food come to the wise, nor wealth to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful. The race is for he or she that can endure to the end, because time and chance, things are going to happen. You're walking through the world and things happen, but you, my friend, must persevere.

Speaker 1:

You must have the mindset that I'm finishing this. You're not going to compromise with yourself. You look yourself in the mirror and you say it. I don't compromise with myself, I love it. All right, my friends, this is Dr Derek Sweet. You're in this race and you're running this race to win it. Amen, alright, see you tomorrow for Self-Care Saturday. Looking forward to going in with you on a beautiful weekend that we have coming up. Be blessed.
