Contagious Courage 3/7: Win it All Wednesday: Fear Doesn't Decide the Outcome You Do
Fear takes more people out of the race than failure ever could, but you don't need to be fearless to become a champion or elite performer.
The key is staying in the game despite your fears and developing a winning mindset that transforms fear into fuel for higher performance.
KEY SUITE SPOTS
• Fear of inadequacy, mistakes, and rejection are common reasons people lose
• Champions aren't fearless—they just interpret fear differently
• Physical symptoms of fear (racing heart, tight neck) are energy for better performance
• Winners aren't attached to outcomes but are willing to take big shots anyway
• Acting with courage means you're already winning, even when facing setbacks
• Great performers like Jordan, Kobe, Brady, and Serena all felt fear
• Faith doesn't cancel fear—it carries you through it
• Van Gogh method: When the voice says "don't paint," that's exactly when you should paint
• Winning affirmation: "Fear doesn't decide the outcome. I do."

what's up, beautiful souls, welcome back, welcome back to the sweet spot. It's win it all. Wednesday, middle of the week, and you're doing it, we're doing it. We're in the middle of our seven day journey called contagious courage. Well, I'm dr derek sweet. And for those of you who don't know, called Contagious Courage.
Speaker 1:Well, I'm Dr Derek Sweet. And for those of you who don't know me, I'm a board-certified psychiatrist. So I specialize in high performance and I work with sports psychiatry. But you know, what I really enjoy is working with individuals who want to be the best version of themselves ever and to tell you the truth, to be the best version of themselves ever. And to tell you the truth, to be the best version of yourself. You know what you're going to have to walk through Opposition, you're going to have to walk through challenges and you're going to have to deal and walk through fear. And trust me as someone who knows what it means to walk through fear and still keep moving.
Speaker 1:I've got a lot to share with you today. So look, let me give it to you straight Fear takes more people out of the race than failure ever could. That's what I have to share with you from doing a lot of peak performance. Work here on a win it all Wednesday. Fear it takes more people out of the race than failure ever does. Fear of not being good enough, fear of falling short, fear of making a mistake, fear of looking stupid, fear of taking the shot and missing or not being able to catch the ball or not being able to execute the play or not being liked to catch the ball or not being able to execute the play or not being liked sound familiar. Oh yeah, those are some of the reasons folks lose. But here's the truth you don't have to be fearless to be an elite performer and you don't have to be fearless to be a champion. You just have to stay in the game despite the fear and you have to have a winning mindset and part of that is believing in yourself enough that you believe without any doubt that you're the best and you're going to win.
Speaker 1:If you don't have that belief, we got to stop and we have to work on your belief system so Jesus can perform miracles in the ancient wisdom in the Bible, because some people who don't believe they can't get the miracle. There's power in belief. Mental and physical illnesses are tied up in belief systems. But I don't want to digress. Let me get right back to the point. Having a winning mindset means that you have to have a way you interpret fear and what you're going to do about the fear. So when your heart's beating kind of fast and your blood vessels are tightening up and your neck feels tight and you feel your heart pounding, that's all energy. One way to interpret it is that your body is getting more gasoline in it, ready to fight, to jump higher, to tackle the problem. All that cortisol and epinephrine and all of that energy it's there for you to perform even higher. Take a deep breath, recenter yourself, be in the moment, feel the fear, but do it anyway. Remember that that's something we talked about on Monday. So that's part of the winning mindset.
Speaker 1:A winner and a champion knows that there's going to be fear. They know there's going to be a big moment. The thing is they're not so attached to the outcome. They're not afraid to take the big shot and miss if that's what comes with the territory, and neither should you. If you have something big you got to do today and you have to handle, you step out there and believe and take action. And if it doesn't work, you'll get up again and you'll do it again. Half the battle, my friend, is just not letting the fear stop you from doing anything. When you step into the moment anyway, despite the nerves you feel, despite the doubts, despite the tight chest, and you are still showing up, you have already won. You've won it all and you have literally stepped into a win it all Wednesday mindset.
Speaker 1:Let me say that again for somebody who's listening and who's on the edge of quitting something If you are acting in courage and even if it's not working yet, you are already winning. That's what the greats knew the Jordans, the Coeys, the Bradys, the Serenas. They felt fear. Of course they did, but they never let fear drive the car.
Speaker 1:Even in Scripture, even in ancient wisdom, jesus in Gethsemane felt deep anguish, deep, deep anguish. David in the caves feared for his life. Esther said if I perish, if I perish, you know what? Faith doesn't cancel fear. That's just baby Christianity. If you're thinking that the faith is canceled, no, the faith doesn't cancel the fear. It carries you through the fear. So that's why you hold on to your faith. So if fear is speaking loud in your ear today, my friend, don't wait for it to shut up. It's never going to shut up. You've got to move anyway. You've got to breathe anyway. You've got to move anyway. You've got to breathe. Anyway. You've got to speak. Anyway. You've got to feel the fear, like Susan Jefferson, author of Feel the Fear, but do it anyway. You've got to feel the fear and do it anyway. Remember the Van Gogh method? I talked to you about that last week when we were doing, I think, pattern Interrupt. We did a whole Pattern Interrupt week. You should go back and listen to that whole series. It was amazing and we talked about the Van Gogh method.
Speaker 1:The famous painter, van Gogh. Remember what he said. I'll never forget it. This amazing painter said if you hear a voice whispering to you, don't paint. You can't paint. Your painting is not going to be any good. By all means, paint, because once you start painting, that voice is not going to have the power anymore. Do it anyway. All right, amen, okay, let's end with an affirmation Fear doesn't decide the outcome. I do, I win by showing up. I win by moving forward. Let's say that again together Fear doesn't decide the outcome. I do, I win by showing up. I win by moving forward. This is Dr Derek Sweet and you, my friend, are already winning. Stay in the race. I'll see you tomorrow for Trust Yourself Thursday, right here on the Sweet Spot. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel and please join me on LinkedIn, on YouTube, and let's keep talking.
