When You Stand, You Win 5/7: Finish Strong Friday: Stand Firm and Fight For It.
The race isn't always won by the swiftest but by those who refuse to give up and continue to face challenges.
Standing Firm is an essential first step to getting to the finish line, says Dr. Derek Suite, the host of the Suite Spot.
KEY SUITE SPOTS
• Standing doesn't always mean physical posture—sometimes it's about maintaining focus or faith
• Determination and perseverance are the two legs we stand on when facing life's challenges
• Ancient wisdom teaches that life rewards endurance more than speed
• Every time you stand firm, your brain creates myelin—protective insulation that strengthens neural connections
• Standing firm trains your prefrontal cortex and quiets your amygdala's threat response
• Neurologically, being perseverant builds resilience by physically changing your brain
• Ask yourself: what are the legs your stand is built on? (discipline, faith, heart, vision)
• The finish line belongs to those who refuse to sit down, not necessarily those who are fastest

STAY AMAZING!
Wow, you made it. You made it to Finish Strong Friday. This is amazing. An entire week we did it.
Speaker 1:This is the Sweet Spot and it's Finish Strong Friday. I'm your host, dr Derek Sweet, and we've been doing this amazing series this week on standing, standing our ground, standing what we believe for Standing. When there's nothing else to do but stand, all we want to do is keep standing. We want to stand. And hey, as we get to the finish strong friday, the finish line here, I'm here to remind you that when we say standing, we're not always talking about feet. Sometimes it's about standing with focus. Sometimes it's about standing with our faith. Sometimes it's about so badly holding everything together inside our minds and our spirits, when the ground beneath us is moving, that all we can do, all we can do, is stand, because when life pushes us, our purpose has to stand up for us. When the pressure rises too much for us, our character has to stand strong with us. And when everything feels shaky, when everything feels like it's gone south, like things are just not working, what we've been saying all week, the most powerful thing you can do, my friend, in those moments is stand. Those moments is stand. We've seen science tell us to stand. We've seen ancient wisdom tell us to stand, and around here, what that boils down to is this when you stand, you win. So here's what I need to catch you up on this Finish Strong Friday, my friend.
Speaker 1:Every stand I was thinking about this every stand needs something to stand on, and for me, going through medical school and going through some of life's challenges that I've had to face, for me my stand stands on determination and perseverance. Those are the warriors that we all have to use. Those are the legs we stand on when life gets heavy. Determination and perseverance and they're a little bit different. You know, when you're determined to do something, something you've set your mind, that's your stand on it. That's a kind of stand. That's one arm of the stand. I am determined to get this done. That's powerful, that's a stand. But then on the other leg, the other part of it, is being perseverant, right, right, just persevering. So that says, no matter what happens, I'm going to keep standing, I'm going to keep going, I'm going to overcome this thing. So those are the legs we stand on when life gets heavy.
Speaker 1:My friend, that's how we cross the finish line on Finish Strong Friday, not always because we are the fastest runner in the race, but because we refused to sit down, we stood for what we believed and the ancient wisdom. It always has an answer for us. Yes, I love science, don't get me wrong, and we'll get to that. We love neuroscience, here on the Sweet Spot. But look, we love ancient wisdom too.
Speaker 1:And ancient wisdom puts it this way the race is not for the swift, nor the battle for the strong. Because guess what? Good luck, bad luck, time, chance, everything happens to everybody. Right, the race. The translation of this is life doesn't always reward speed. Life rewards your stand and life rewards your endurance.
Speaker 1:And each and every one of us has this capacity to stand on determination, to stand in perseverance and to be in a stand for endurance. Yes, confucius even said something about this. He said it doesn't matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. That's the power of being in a stand when you're determined and you're going to persevere. And because I promised you some science, I'm going to tell you that every time you push through, every time you stand firm, you are training your brain to do all kinds of powerful things. We've seen how it helps your prefrontal cortex, your brain's CEO make powerful decisions. We've seen how being in a stand quiets down the threat center of your brain, the amygdala. And now, on Finish Strong Friday, we're going to drop some more knowledge on you, believe it or not.
Speaker 1:Every time you push through, every time you stand firm, when it's easier to fold, but you say, you say, hey, I'm going to stand firm, your brain lays down something called myelin, m-y-e-l-i-n. You know what myelin is? This little insulation, it's's like a think of, like a wire, and the insulation around the wire that protects the wire. That's what the brain does. When you start being in a stand, it starts making more myelin, more protection. It protects your habits, it strengthens your skills. It makes your mindset faster, smoother and built to last. That's how resilience gets real. You become more resilient in your brain. You don't even know it's happening. You just think you're just getting stronger.
Speaker 1:But let me tell you, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, my friends. We have a brain that has a lot of neuroplasticity in it. It can adapt okay, and your determination will fuel your direction. Your perseverance will build your endurance, and this myelin that I'm talking about, myelin makes sure that the lessons you're learning sticks in your brain. That's how your brain gets better at the finish line, at finishing hard things, by practicing not being a quitter, by being in your stand for being perseverant and determined about what you're doing.
Speaker 1:So today, as you get up, this is the challenge. All right, here's your move for this. Finish strong friday. Ask yourself what legs are my stand on. Is it discipline? Is it faith? Is it heart? Is it vision? What are the legs? What are you standing on this? Finish strong friday, whatever it is, once you've thought it out, lean on on it, stand on it and finish with it, because the race isn't always won by the swift. I don't care who's ahead of you, I don't care whose life looks a thousand times better, I don't care how fast they're moving. The race is not for the swift, it's for the person who can endure. All right. But the finish now, the finish belongs to the guy or the gal who does not sit down, and you're not sitting down on this, all right. Now.
Speaker 1:This is Dr Derek Sweet. You are in the sweet spot. You're about finishing strong this Friday. In your stand, you're standing on determination. Today, you're standing on determination. Today, you're standing on perseverance. Today, you're going to stand like you were built for this because when you stand, that's right, you win. Look, and tomorrow, oh my goodness, tomorrow, we're slowing it all the way down, Because sometimes the strongest thing you can do, my friend, is stand still. Okay, we'll touch that tomorrow in Self-Care Saturday. Love and blessings. This is Dr Sweet.
