Body Language (7/7): Silence and Stillness Your Under-Used Superpowers: #SLOWDOWNSUNDAY
Have you ever noticed how a black hole—one of the most powerful forces in the universe—operates in complete silence? That's the profound metaphor Dr. Derek Suite explores in this culminating episode of our body language series, where we discover that true power often resides in stillness, not constant motion.
Throughout the week, we've journeyed through different aspects of nonverbal communication: how our bodies speak before we enter rooms, the importance of letting our physical selves lead our minds, refining our walk, listening to bodily signals, standing with strength, and using breath to reset. Today, we bring it all together with the ultimate lesson—the power of presence.
Drawing fascinating parallels between human stillness and astrophysics, Dr. Sweet introduces us to a scientifically-backed tool for achieving deep relaxation: "Weightless" by Marconi Union, a song neuroscientists have proven reduces stress, slows heart rate, and calms the brain's fear circuits.
The challenge is beautifully simple yet potentially life-changing: spend just ten minutes in complete stillness with this music, allowing your body, breath, and spirit to realign. As ancient wisdom from Exodus reminds us, sometimes the most powerful action is simply being still.
Ready to transform your presence and harness the silent power that exists within you? This episode offers practical guidance for incorporating moments of intentional stillness into your daily life, explaining how these brief pauses can completely reset your nervous system and enhance your performance in every area.
Whether you're seeking to improve your professional presence, manage anxiety, or simply find more peace in a chaotic world, these insights will help you speak volumes without saying a word.
STAY AMAZING!!
Greetings and welcome back beautiful souls. Welcome back to the sweet spot. It is slow down Sunday. Wow, you did the entire week with me. Together, we explored the power of body language and here on day seven, on the sweet spot're going to bring this to a close. I'm Dr Derek Sweet. This is the Sweet Spot. It's Slow Down Sunday. As you know, I'm a board certified psychiatrist who specializes in high performance. More than that, I'm all about partnering with you on achieving the best version of ourselves that we can possibly achieve through the exchange of knowledge that's happening right here between you and me right now on the Sweet Spot. I am honored that you have taken the moment to listen to today's podcast. So it's Slow Down Sunday.
Speaker 1:Here's where we take a deep breath, my friend, in through the nose, hold for a little bit, and then out through the mouth very slowly. You know, when you exhale longer than you inhale, you induce a sense of relaxation. You send the message to the brain that it's time to relax, and it's a funny thing when we think about relaxation, we begin to relax Wherever we put our attention. That's what the body and the mind starts to pick up. So you took a deep breath. And if you didn't take one. Now you know it's amazing how many of us, myself included, can get through a day and never take a deep breath, never honor our lungs. And all this rich oxygen is free for us to take a nice deep breath today, on Slow Down Sunday. It is something that you can do for yourself that brings rich oxygen into your blood and then gets that oxygen transported all through your body and distributed all over your cells and various tissues and provides energy and refreshing and resetting. How powerful is that? So, taking a deep breath, this isn't just a lesson. This is a landing for us today. We're going to land today. Let's reflect.
Speaker 1:All week long we've been talking about body language. On Monday, remember, we said that you're speaking before you even enter the room. Okay, that your body speaks for you. On tuesday, we talked about letting the body lead, lead the mind, not always having the mind tell the body what to do, that sometimes we have to let the body tell the mind how to think and feel. On Wednesday, we talked about refining our walk, walking like a winner, because Wednesday is win it all Wednesday, and we talked about letting your jaw relax, remember. And then, thursday, we turned inward. It was trust yourself, thursday, remember, and we talked about turning inward and listening to what our body was trying to say. Friday finished strong Friday, we stood still and we let strength close the moment. For us, yesterday was self-care Saturday, and we used breath to reset and return home to the body. I invite you to go back and listen to any one of these if you're interested in just refreshing your mind about the power of your body language.
Speaker 1:Health is tied into this. Connecting to our bodies, with our minds, is a very important aspect of health, and today we slow down completely Because the ultimate form of power is presence, not movement, not noise. Presence and stillness. Let me tell you something fascinating In astrophysics. We always do astrophysics on Sunday. By now you've figured that out on the sweet spot. We don't do neuroscience, we don't do physiology, we just touch into a little astrophysics.
Speaker 1:In astrophysics, a black hole is a phenomenon. It is one of the most powerful things in the universe. It's not a hole in space, it's actually a collapsed star, so dense and so heavy that its gravity literally pulls and sucks everything into it, even light. And guess what it makes? No noise, there's no flashing, just this presence so powerful, so strong, and it's altering time and space itself, power in silence and we've talked about that here, on the Sweet Spot that in this world, some of the most powerful things electricity, the sun, the moon, the sky quiet, silent. And today I invite you into your own silence, your own gravitational pull of stillness. And here's how we're going to do that. I want you to find a quiet space and I'm going to recommend a song that we use with performers all the time.
Speaker 1:The song is called Weightless. It's an instrumental song by Marconi Union, that's M-A-R-C-O-N-I Union, u-n-i-o-n, and the song is called Weightless. Now, this is not just music. This is a kind of medicine for the mind. Neuroscientists have studied this song and it has been proven to reduce stress, to slow the heart rate, to lower cortisol levels and calm the brain, calm its fear centers and its fear circuits. And it's a bit of an unpredictable song. It doesn't follow the usual patterns that songs follow, and this is why we recommend it. Often in places and spaces where performance anxiety tend to fill up, get this song, Wait Less. Put on some headphones if you can, or just let it play on your Alexa. Less. Put on some headphones if you can, or just let it play on your Alexa, and let this song weight less wash over you.
Speaker 1:Today, on slow down Sunday, give yourself this treat and when you let it wash over you, allow it to allow your body to relax and let go. Let the parasympathetic nervous system that we talked about yesterday kick in. Rest your mind, rest your body and rest your spirit. Notice how you're breathing. Don't try to change anything, just notice how you're being. Notice how your body is feeling.
Speaker 1:On the couch, on the bed, on the chair, wherever you are, just be still. That's the idea. Be still and trust. Trust that everything is happening as it should be happening, as it needs to happen, and that you're going to be okay. And the ancient wisdom, again, always finds us right. Ancient wisdom is always around us.
Speaker 1:In Exodus 14, verse 14, it says this the Lord, god, the most high, will fight for you, will fight for you. All you need to do is be still. Wow, stillness is not absence, it's alignment. It's where your body, your breath and your spirit can catch up with each other. But first we've got to be still. We've got to find that minute or two for stillness, to let your nervous system catch up with you, to let your mind catch up with you, to let the ancient wisdom speak to you Just for 10 minutes. Just 10 minutes, tiddy, that's a challenge. And play this song weightless, sit in silence, no talking, no scrolling, just gravity, just breath and just presence, because the body doesn't always need to move to speak and the soul doesn't always need noise to heal. I know you're getting this and I pray and beg you to give yourself the five to ten minutes that you need.
Speaker 1:Thank you so much for spending this week exploring the power of body language with me. I'm Dr Derek Sweet. Let's carry what we learned into how we show up in every room, in every moment, in every breath. You've been listening to the Sweet Spot all week long and I look forward to seeing you next week. If you liked what you heard this week about the power of body language, the silent signal that our body sends, I would like you to just subscribe and become a part of our family here on the Sweet Spot and, more than that, if you could share it. Share it with a friend or family member who could use these insights. Until I see you again, love and blessings. Take care.
