SPEAKER_00:

Welcome, welcome back to the Sweet Spot, beautiful souls. This is Finish Strong Friday here on the Sweet Spot. Around these parts, we don't just say TGIF, we say Finish Strong Friday. Yes, I'm Dr. Derek Sweet. Yes, I'm a board certified psychiatrist who specializes in peak performance. And yes, more than that, I'm right here with you. Walking this road, exploring what's possible with you whenever we can. We stop carrying all these weights this week because we're in a release series. We're in the release discussion. We're doing a seven-day series here on this sweet spot about the seven releases. Oh my goodness. Yeah, we've been doing what I consider sacred work this week. This is one of our best weeks ever. It's been wonderful. On Monday, Makey Moves Monday, we released The Rush. We slowed the rush down. On Take Action Tuesday, we stopped lying to ourselves. We released the lie. On Win It All Wednesday, we put down the weight that wasn't ours. We released the extra weight and pressure. On Thursday, trust yourself Thursday. We released an old identity that no longer fit us. And today, today we step into the doorway that scares almost everyone. Release the fear of starting over. And why does starting over feel so scary? You know, most people don't fear change, in my estimation. They don't. They fear the gap between who they were and who they're becoming. They fear the loss of their place, the losing of their rhythm, the judgment that might come from others. They fear disappointing people, other people. They fear looking silly or stupid or inexperienced. They fear the unknown, not knowing what comes next. And they they also fear the grief. And there's grief associated with leaving a familiar version of life that you knew behind. So even when life feels heavy and misaligned and un and weird and and um difficult, the familiar part of it can feel safer than going for freedom. And that's why so much of us get stuck in what we're doing and can't seem to get out. We don't want to get out half the time because it's familiar. And remember, we talked about this. The brain will take familiar over a perceived threat anytime. Sometimes we've got to step out on faith. And that's why the ancient wisdom, and I'm ahead of myself, but that's why the ancient wisdom says that faith without works is dead. You've got you can't just have faith. You gotta step, you gotta step out. This is about releasing the fear, releasing the fear of starting over, right? New beginnings, they're not a punishment. We're calling them a promotion, but we have to see it that way and conceive of it that way. Absolutely, absolutely, you've got to see it because look, look, starting over is not a sign of failure, it's a sign of readiness, it's life pulling you towards the new beginning. It's because something in you has quietly completed a chapter and it's time to move on, or sometimes life completes a chapter and it's time to move on. And your spirit knows before your mind can even catch up. And starting over is important. You can't sit there, well, you can sit there and do nothing, but it's never good. Starting over has its own benefits, and it's not just spiritual, it's neurological, it's neuroscientific. Let's talk about what happens in the brain. You know I love going into the science, and we have to do that because we're about science, soul, and success, and success here in the sweet spot. So let's talk about what really happens in the brain when we choose to start over. Starting over triggers a part of the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex, the ACC. We've talked about it here on the sweet spot. Remember, that's the region of the brain that monitors the environment for conflicts, mistakes, and uncertainty. The ACC is constantly looking for that. But here's the miracle: when you take a new step, the brain's uncertainty alarm decreases. Not because your life becomes predictable, but because you just adapted by taking a step. And when you take that step, your dopamine system kicks in. Dopamine doesn't just reward success, it rewards movement towards growth. Remember, we talked about this last week that you've got to move, in addition to having the momentum and the thoughts in your head. It's movement that sets things in motion for you. So even if the step feels shaky, my friend, even if you don't have the whole plan yet, even if your voice is trembling, your brain releases a confidence signal that says, keep going, you're building something new the minute you take that first step. It's amazing that big-time performers that I've seen and worked with will know that they have to step onto the field or to pitch or the court or off the diving board, wherever they are, they know that that first step is the key because starting over, taking the step is what rewires your brain for courage, and the ancient wisdom never fails. We're about science, soul, and success. Here's the soul part. In the message Bible, there is this verse in Isaiah 43, 18. Forget about what's happened. Don't keep going over your old history. Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand new. That's God speaking. Forget about what's happened. Don't worry about the old history. Stay alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand new. Isaiah. Now I know my King James version people want me to say this. Behold, I do a new thing, is how it's um supposed to be said from the classical King James version. Alright, so in the message Bible, I'm about to do something brand new. In the KJV, behold, I will do a new thing. But both translations remind us of the same thing. God is not meeting you after the new beginning. That's the key I want you to take away. God is not meeting you after the new beginning. God is meeting you inside the beginning. Your job and my job is to step, is to have enough faith to take that first step to start over wherever we are. If life dealt us a blow and we have to start over, or if we're just in a new project and we've got to take the first step, that's where God will meet us. God's job is in the path. Two tools to release the fear of starting over. The first one is redefine what starting over really means. Say this slowly. I'm not starting from scratch. I'm starting from experience. People forget that. Like they always think they're scared, they're starting from scratch. When in fact, they have so much experience. You have so much experience. You know so much. You are stepping forward with more wisdom than you know, more strength than you think you have. You have more insights based on the life you've lived and the things you've accomplished. You have more self-awareness, and you have a clearer vision of what you will no longer tolerate if you allow yourself to see that. That's why you can start over. You have so much. Don't count what's not there. Think about what's there. And this isn't about reset, you're upgrading. Think of it that way. So that's the first tool. Really sort of redefine what starting over really means. It's not from scratch, it's from experience and it's an upgrade. You're upgrading. And the second tool, the 10-second courage rule, I call it. The 10-second courage rule. If something really scares you, give yourself 10 seconds to act and then act. Send the email, make the call, open the notebook, go talk to the person that you have to say something to, walk into the gym, go to the doctor, sign up, say yes, or say no, whatever it is. Courage doesn't come from thinking, it comes from moving. You've got to act. The fear of starting disappears the moment you get in motion, even if it's a tiny step. So I want you to complete this sentence and we're out. The new beginning I'm willing to take, even if I'm scared is just say that out loud. The new beginning I'm willing to take, even if I'm scared, is say it, name it, and let your spirit hear you say it. Let your brain absorb it. And your future self is gonna be very happy with you. Your future self is already standing on the other side of that step, cheering you forward and saying, Yeah, come on, let's do this. So tomorrow, tomorrow we move into a different kind of release. Tomorrow is self-care Saturday, and we're gonna release the need for control. Because peace only arrives the minute you let go, the minute you unclench. Okay? Alright, but I won't get into that because that's all about tomorrow. And I want you to join me there so we can really begin to bring this home and land this plane, the plane on the releases, the seven releases. So if today, if today's episode stirred something in you, share it with someone who's standing at the edge of a new chapter, but afraid to begin again. I'll see you tomorrow, beautiful souls. One bread at a time, one release at a time. This is Dr. Sweet. Let's do this.
