Introducing Cam Clark

What Making Moves Monday Means

SPEAKER_00

All right. Welcome, welcome, welcome everyone. Welcome to the Sweet Spot. It is Making Moves Monday here on the Sweet Spot. And as you know, we are now in a new series. We are doing a series where we are interviewing really cool people. And today I'm really blessed. I'm blessed to have a friend, a colleague, an NFL scout, a former NFL player, a man who is respected around the sports industry and beyond. My good buddy, Cam Clark. Cam, how are you doing today, boss? I'm doing well. Doing well. Thank you for having me. Okay, well, Cam, as I was explained to you before we jumped on, this is new territory for me here on the Sweet Spot. Every Mickey Moose Monday, I get on here and I talk about different topics, and I'm usually just flowing. Today it's so different to have you here because I am now free to sit back and listen and learn and gain wisdom from someone who I just enjoy talking to, and I'm sure our listeners and viewers will be more than happy to hear from you today as we take uh a minute just to discuss the sweet spot. First of all, I don't know if you actually listen to the sweet spot a lot, but I'm hoping you do. You've heard our episodes, right? At least one. Without a doubt. Okay, that's great. That's great. Fine time for me to ask, huh? Um well, what I was hoping to do with you today is ask you about your thoughts on themes that we use on the sweet spot. For example, today it's Monday. We call it Making Moves Monday. And when I say making moves, it's really to get our listeners, our viewers galvanized to get up, get out, do things. Monday's a day where, for most of us, it's about actions, about doing something. You have to make your move. And for the past few years, we've been just handling all these themes on various ways to stay motivated, inspired, and what to overcome to make that move. None of a pro-athlete, NFL, high-level executive man here in front of me who is making moves every Monday. I have to ask you, Cam. I must. What does making moves Monday mean to you when you hear that? Like, what is it? What does it signify? How do you resonate with it?

Alignment Over Perfection

SPEAKER_01

That's a great question. Well, Monday's the beginning of the week, right? The day that many people dread, and often the day that sets the tone for the week. For me, when I think about making moves Monday, I think about making moves that align with the beliefs that I have about myself, right? Let's take the thinking out of it. If it's going to the gym, well, if I if I believe that I'm an athlete, if I believe, and that's a part of my identity, I'm trying to make it simple, right? So I want to make the moves that are in alignment with who I am, but more importantly, the person that I want to be. So I don't want to overthink things. I don't want to, you know, focus on more so getting things perfect. I'm more so focused on the action and taking that 1%, right? Whether that's diet, right? Whether that's in a relationship, whether that's managing clients, all that goes hand in hand is what's the low-hanging fruit, and let's go out and let's go ahead and achieve that today. Literally, that's what's in your mind. Without a doubt. Because I have to make it simple for myself. Much like the listeners, many of us can struggle with paralysis by analysis or waiting for all the pieces to be perfect for us to make the right move. And I'm a victim of that just as much as anyone else, if not more. Right? I'm a perfectionist. I wanted to, I want the message before I send it to be perfect. Before I post the picture, I want to make sure it's the right lighting, the right angle. It's a blessing because I'm detailed, but at the same time, it can get in the way of making moves. Right. So that's my mindset is what who am I? Who do I want to be? And what actions can I do? What low-hanging fruit is there for me, whether it's professional, whether it's, you know, and oftentimes it's never going to be perfect, right? We're busy, we're all trying to get our accomplish what we need to accomplish, but what moves can I make that are in alignment with the person that I want to be? And don't overthink it. Just do it.

Identity-Guided Decisions

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Like, don't overthink it, just do it. I like it. Yeah, because sometimes the clarity comes after the movement. That's what we've been discovering here on this the sweet spot, is that sometimes you have to make the move first in order to get the revelation. Not saying you don't plan, because I'm like you, I definitely suffer from the analysis paralysis thing. It's something I have to work on all the time. One of the things my wife has taught me, Darcelle, she we I had her on here uh uh last week, and she said, done is better than perfect. That is something she always says to me because I'm constantly trying to perfect things before I get out. Two things that stuck out for me as you were speaking. One, you talked about low-hanging fruit. And then the other thing is about don't overthink, just move. I think the third thing you said that also resonated with me was this idea of who I want to become or who I am becoming, and trying to close the gap with my my movements to that. Those are three nuggets right there.

SPEAKER_01

So go ahead. No, and I think when we talk about that third point in particular, we talk about making the moves that are in alignment with the person that you want to be. To me, that is, it's not about striving to be perfect. It's not about that at all. It's just it makes it simple. It simplifies it, right? If I if I'm choosing for breakfast, do I want McDonald's? Do I want to eat the apple? Right? Well, who do I believe I am? And if I can remember who I am, that makes that decision easy. If I want to snooze my alarm, not go get that workout in, right? Well, if I if that decision, if I know who I am and I'm making my decisions based off of that and who I want to be, it makes that decision simple, right? If it's, you know, we get client, you get a call from a client, right? Sometimes it's ah, you know, well, what is this call gonna be? Or whether it's uh uh responding to an email, let's just go respond to it now. If I see myself as a timely person, I see myself as someone that's gonna prioritize others that can drop what I'm doing and make someone else feel like what they're going through and what they're doing is the number one thing in my life. If that's who I strive to be, well, let's make the simple actions that can align with that.

Overcoming Obstacles And Control

SPEAKER_00

100%. It's just super focused how you said that. So I guess for me, in the work that I do, it's about blocks and hurdles and challenges and obstacles as well, right? So you can have the best intentions in the world. Okay, it's Monday. Make it moves Monday. I'm gonna get up and I'm gonna go for it. But life happens. A challenge can hit, a limitation. Something can go wrong. I'm wondering in your calculus and your math, if that has ever happened with you, or what would you advise? Uh what kinds of how how do you get past obstacles that can get in the way of making the move here on the Making Moves Monday? What would you say?

Nights, Mornings, And Letting Go

SPEAKER_01

That's a great question. I would say life happens, and we have to do the best job that we can do to control the controllables. So if it's I want to start waking up earlier and whatever, whatever it may be, we talk, I I I'm emphasizing, put a ton of emphasis on morning, on the mornings. You were talking about breakfast, we're talking about working out in the morning, we're talking about the mornings, but because that's the beginning of the day. But if that is the goal, what can I do the night before? If it's laying out that outfit, if I know majority of the time, if I wait until 8 p.m. or 8 a.m. to get going or to start trying to make that make whatever. If I if I let the day dictate what's going to happen, I'm always going to be at the mercy of the day. So I think the main thing is controlling the controllables. And you talked about as well the hurdles, the the calculations that didn't come up the night before when you said that you were going to go and do this the next day, when you were in that moment and and it all felt, you know, you you you had prophesized it and you wrote it down and said you were gonna do it, felt like you almost had accomplished it. Well, now there's a whole nother there's a whole nother set of circumstances, right? So it's controlling the controllables and understanding that we don't control everything. And just because you had planned to do it, you might not, it might not be in the order that you might not get those things done in the order in which you wanted to, but it's okay. Well, let's say something comes up for in your line of work, whether it's a client or having to go check on a team and whatever you might have had wanted to focus on the sweet spot more that day. Well, had to go to the Knicks, had to go to the Jets, had to do all these other kind of type things. What can I do still to where I can check that box and say I took a small step in that direction? And sometimes it might be rescheduling it to that next day. But I think half of the battle is having the right intentions and being able to have the stick toitiveness. I love that word, the stick tuitiveness to say that, okay, well, I had the plan for this and it didn't work, work that way today. But being able to say steadfast and saying, okay, well, I'm gonna go out and set the same goal tomorrow, right? And I'm gonna plan even better. And I'm gonna game plan and brainstorm an even better way to where I can control, I can attempt to control the controllables even better. And what we can't control, we have to let go of at the end of the day.

SPEAKER_00

So letting go is also a part of this. It's not it's not just about planning, it's being able to be flexible, to let go of your plan, to adapt. If I'm listening to you carefully, it's like part of making your move is also having an adaptive uh uh response pattern where you can adapt, still have your plan or whatever, but adapt.

SPEAKER_01

Without a doubt. Controlling the controllables. I'm sure you can relate or the listeners, sometimes you get in bed at night and you start thinking of all the things that you wanted to do this day and that you didn't accomplish. And it's like, oh, it's it can be a bit overwhelming just thinking of the daunting task. And if I would have done it today, it would have been much easier to do it tomorrow. Whatever, whatever task we may have. Um, but it's not time to get up and go do those things right now when you're in bed and you're thinking about them. It's it's time to plan and time to move forward. So I truly believe in the saying is how much how much you let go of determines how far you can go.

Counting The Cost And Integrity

SPEAKER_00

That's so true because you know, when I'm pushing, I sometimes I push it, uh go past midnight, and it's never good when I want to squeeze another two hours out of the day, right? So I'll go to bed at 2 a.m. instead of being in bed by 12 or 11 or 10, because I'm just trying to grind and get more done and get more done. But then the price I pay, because I wouldn't, I'm not letting go to use your term, I didn't let go of the day and puts and prioritize my sleep and my rest and my recovery. I I kind of enter into the next day on four hours of sleep or five hours of sleep, and I'm paying the price, I'm paying it in different ways. So there is a cost to this, uh, as if I'm listening to you carefully, and uh the idea to adapt and to let go uh is is probably something we can all benefit from. And maybe if you're listening out there and you're thinking about your life and all that you have to do, and we could listen to what Cam just said about letting go and make that part of the practice. Maybe part of the move this Monday is to let go, is to figure out a way to let go. I know it's very hard for me because when I get going and I'm uh working on a project, burning the quote unquote midnight, or it's hard to let go. But then when the nervous system doesn't let go, this is why we have problems, why we have stress and high blood pressure, all these other things.

SPEAKER_01

No doubt. And we're both in the in the service field. So past midnight, it's a regular, I'm not the guy that's in bed at 10 p.m. You know, I'd love to be, but that's just not what the job calls for. And we we we owe a service to other people. And with that service, what we have to take what comes with that. But I think setting the goals and setting the intentions, and you know, this probably won't be this put my first saying that I drop on the on the sweet spot, but it won't be my last. I I love sayings, but God doesn't give with both hands, right? So if you're gonna go and we're gonna stay up late that night and we're gonna have to work, and you know, that doesn't mean we get to sleep in in the morning, right? We we took on the front end, so on the back end we have to pay the piper. So yeah, that's how I view that as well. So understanding that coming to grips with the decisions that you make, right? It's not it's never going to be perfect, man. I mean, if it was perfect, I mean, what's the joy in doing it? So it's being able to find ways to maintain your edge and still accomplish what you need to accomplish while also fulfilling your day-to-day duties. So, and it's not about beating yourself up and it's it's not that at all. But it's like I said, it's it's coming to grips with if I do stay up late the night before I understand the consequence. Make peace with that consequence before, you know, before you even decide to stay up late. And if it's a consequence that you're not willing to make peace with, then don't do the action.

Mental Movement And Closing

SPEAKER_00

100%. So yeah, count the cost. I like that. Count the cost. Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, we're about science, soul, and success here on the sweet spot. We blend all three. So the science is clear about going to bed late. And uh, yeah, the the soul part in the ancient wisdom, there is this thing about counting the cost. If you're gonna build a house, if you're gonna take on a venture, count the cost. If you're gonna do an action, count the cost. And so, yeah, that success depends on being able to anticipate and being able to fulfill responsibilities and also being uh in integrity about that. So that's what I heard when you were speaking was that there was a lot of integrity that even if I'm gonna go to bed late, I'm still gonna have to make the move on Monday. So Sunday night sets up Monday morning, and the kind of Monday morning I want to have. Now, I I will say, because you and I do share this thing in common about going to bed late, you know, and and I'm I and I and I teach on sleep. The irony is I teach so much on sleep and I know so much about sleep. And uh I'm writing this book on sleep and I'm sending it to the editors, and they're they're saying to me, uh, Doc, you're sending it at like 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Aren't you? Shouldn't you be like doing what is being said in the book? And more and more I'm practicing it. Uh there's this part though about recovery, and we'll probably talk more about that when we get to self-care. Uh the body keeps receipts, and the mind keeps receipts. So ultimately, this will be paid back at some point in time. And uh the the key is though that you don't want your performance to fall off because you're slacking on something, or because you are just now going to uh make it so that you don't live up to what you commit to, right? And and I think that's what I heard you say is that if you're going to make uh a decision to say go to bed late, you can also make the decision to get up early. Yes. Mm-hmm. Absolutely. Mm-hmm. Nail woman is understood. Understood. Well, Cam, you know, I don't know where the time goes when we have these conversations on the sweet spot, but I have to tell you, I want to thank you so much for dropping all this wisdom today. I learned so much from you already, dude. Like I got it. I got so much. I got my level of responsibility. I got that I can let go. I do understand that there's, I have to count the cost. I really understand now that it's about my integrity. So much of movement is about what's in the mind before we take that step. And the and the other thing about clarity, clarity coming after you move. Sometimes you just have to make the move. You have to make the move.

SPEAKER_01

Just do it, like Nike. Just do it. The clarity will come later. I love that. And I love a point that you made um just about oftentimes the movement starts in the mind. And I love that you said that because we cannot discount getting past middle blocks. It doesn't always, the movement doesn't always show up in the physical. I use a lot of physical examples, working out, eating breakfast, all those type things. But a lot of time, once we've we've made that mental breakthrough, it's not the end of the road. The job isn't complete, but we can't discount mental movement. It's just as important as physical, if if not more.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. It's the mind, body, spirit connection, man. It's all working together. And that's why conversations like these on the sweet spot are important. And I'm so glad that now I am speaking to other beings like yourself to gain wisdom and to get more clarity and get direction. And this was powerful today. This was making moves Monday. We're on the sweet spot. Cam, you're gonna be with us all week long. And I can't, I know listeners out there are probably saying, wow, where did Dr. Sweet find this dude? And I have to tell you, it's a God send to know you, Cam. And I'm grateful that you're not only a friend, but a colleague and uh a partner in debate. And really what's what's happening here is that souls are connecting, energies are connecting, and the world is beginning to see, I think, the the power, the sheer power that exists between us as we begin to expand our conversation into the universe. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. Grateful for the opportunity, Doctor.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. So we'll see you tomorrow for Take Action Tuesday.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Let's do it. All right, thank you. Thank you.
