Greetings, greetings, and welcome. Welcome back to the Sweet Spot. We're working on the word mindset, the power of mindset, and how does it infuse itself into everything that we do? Do you understand what mindset means? What is your definition of mindset? Here's what I think. Mindset is a collection of beliefs. That's it. It's a collection of beliefs. What do you believe? And with that belief comes expectations. It's a collection of expectations along with a collection of beliefs. Now you put the beliefs and your expectations together, and then we're gonna have something called interpretations. You're gonna interpret based on what you believe and what you expect. And then how you pay attention, what you notice, the habits of your attention. So this is mindset. I'm constructing something for you, of course, more psychological because I'm in psychiatry and all of that. Mindset is a collection of beliefs, expectations, and interpretations, your habits of attention as well, shaping how you see the world, shaping how you understand the world, shaping what meaning you give to anything that happens in your world, how you understand what is happening, and how you're gonna respond, how you choose to respond. Notice I said choose to respond.
This is how you're gonna make your move. You're gonna make your move based on your collection of beliefs, your expectations, your interpretations, your habits of attention, and how you understand what's going on and what you choose to do, what you choose to respond. Why am I saying choose to respond? Why am I saying your beliefs and your expectations? Because your mindset is yours. You do have control, you do have power, you definitely do. And so when you're ready to make your move, when you're ready to take your next step, a good thing to do is to think through what is your mindset? What are you believing? What do you really believe is gonna happen here? What do you believe about what happened to you? What do you expect? What is your expectation level? Is it high, low, is it positive, negative? What about your expectations? Have you examined them, right? And how are you interpreting what's going on? Is it happening to you or is it happening for you? Is this the worst day in the world or is this an opportunity for you to show your strength? It's all in what you interpret out of your beliefs and your expectations.
And what are you paying attention to? Are you always looking for the positive? Are you always paying attention to the good? Is that your habit to see the best in everything? To be optimistic? Or is it the opposite? Do you find fault? Do you see what's wrong? Are you always looking in the mirror and critiquing what's not working? Are you always finding the error and then living with it? Not saying that that's a bad thing to find errors, but just if that's the mindset and that's all you're gonna see, then that's what the world's gonna give you. So, yeah, mindset, sweet spotters, a big word. And I wanted us to have the right definition of it. This collection of beliefs, this collection of expectations, this way of interpreting the world, right? So that you can understand what a mindset is, right? So, do you get it? Are you with me on that? Perfect. Because if you're an athlete, if you're a high performer, right, when when you hear that, you should think about how is my mindset influencing what I'm noticing on the field, on the court, on the pitch, on the ice, wherever I perform on the stage, at the board meeting. How is my mindset influencing what I notice? Because what you're noticing and what you're paying attention to is your reality. And what you believe is possible comes out of what you're noticing a lot, a lot of times. How you interpret pressure if you're
a performer or you are somebody under a pressure, how do you interpret it? That's part of your mindset, and what you do after success, what you do after failure, that's also part of your mindset. So, yeah, mindset's very important. And so I'm asking you and challenging you before you make your moves to really check in with your mindset. And even after you've made your move, check in with your mindset. What you do after success is important to know. What you do after failure or not things not working out is important to understand. How you deal with uncertainty or injury or disappointment or frustration matters, and your mindset is the key. So that's it for today. We're just going to breathe and spend a moment with the word mindset. Before we make any move, we're going to check in with our mindset. What is a collection of beliefs? What is my collection of expectations? What is the collection of my interpretations say? Who am I being and what am I thinking and how am I valuing this moment? And I have control here because the mindset belongs to me.
You know, I think of mindset as uh as an internal lens, a lens through which you can interpret any experience. You and I are looking through a lens today, this morning, this afternoon, this evening, whenever you're listening to this, you are looking through a lens. You're in fact listening to me through a lens today. The lens of your mindset. And you're interpreting whether what I'm saying is nonsense or it's making sense to you. So mindset is the internal lens. It's not like the glasses you're wearing on your face or your contacts or whatever, or it's more like something internal that you you you you listen to the world and you make sense of the world with, an internal lens through which you interpret any experience. And that's why two athletes or two people can face the same challenge and have a completely different response. Because you know why? Because they're giving that experience a different meaning based on the lens they're looking through. What lens are you looking through today? What lens are you listening through today? What lens are you feeling through today? For science, the soul and for success. This is the sweet spot. This is the mindset. I believe in you. I know you've got this. I know you can overcome it. I'll see you next go round as we continue the journey into might. This is Dr. Derek Sweet. You're listening to The Sweet Spot. Let's have fun.
